Parrot Anafi Criticize: The Best Entry-Level Portable 4K Filming Drone - The Drive

One Big Suspicion on a under discussion: Is the Parrot Anafi the best portable filming drone. Five years ago if we were to tell you that there's a camera that can fly, create automated cinematic shots, fill in 4K at 100 mbps, and fold up to fit in a backpack or long pocket, how much do you think it would cost. In 2013, GoPro released the chief compact 4K camera with the Hero 3+, which rang in at about $500. It also didn't fly. Today, for just a little more cash, you can wobble either the Parrot Anafi ($699) and the DJI Mavic Air ($799) and get yourself a filming drone with a 4K camera that can shoot at double the bitrate of that first GoPro. We set out to see how the Parrot stands up to the DJI—arguably the biggest tag in consumer drones right now—for a hundred bucks less. Parrot Anafi: The Pros We buy cameras to capture life story in detail. The Parrot Anafi can shoot 4K at 100 mbps. the higher the bitrate, the more detail you get, and 100mbps is truly good for a compact camera (most shoot at 50mbps). The footage that comes from the Anafi is stunning. Cars (our grounds of choice, naturally) come out in glorious 4K detail—all the better for pixel peepers to drool over. Low angle shots are a must in the car everybody, making vehicles look larger than life. A Dodge Demon looks angrier from a lower perspective fish for, and previously most drones weren't capable of shooting upwards because the camera was physically under the body of the drone. But the Anafi has a fa-mounted camera, which allows it to tilt up and down 180 degrees and provide a new and much-needed perspective from a drone. The DJI Mavic Air isn't proficient of shooting upwards because of the camera placement, and Anafi has a clear win here. When dealing with cars that are loud, or in shops that are louder, people don't indeed mind the buzzing of a drone. But that's not true for everyone, and thankfully the Parrot Anafi is the quietest drone we've tested, creating much less fracas than the Mavic Air. The Anafi folds its arms forwards which makes it longer and thinner than the competition when it comes to storage. Margin is everything when traveling for a shoot, and every piece of equipment takes up precious real estate. In our experience, it's easier to fit an walk-on item into a crowded camera bag if it's long and thin, as opposed to something that is shorter and wider. Our main shooting drone for big productions is a DJI Boost 2, which is large and heavy, requiring its own special case that's larger than a carry-on suitcase. Since the Anafi is only 11. 3 oz, our video line-up complains much less about carrying a drone around. We also have to deal with a lot of cables in this business, and it seems like each high-end work takes its own proprietary charger or connection to the computer. It was a geeky thrill to see that the Anafi charges from a plain old USB-C twine that can plug into a laptop. Parrot Anafi: The Cons We buy filming drones to capture cinematic, stable shots from the air. If we hand the Anafi hovering in place for a stable shot and didn't use any stick inputs, there was a slight wiggle as if it was stressful to find its balance. This isn't apparent when shooting from far distances, but it became more noticeable the closer we moved toward a disposed to—often the case with cars. Source: www.thedrive.com

Survey: Parrot Anafi - WIRED

DJI has dominated the skies for years now. The raceway currently isn't even close, with the Drone King capturing around three quarters of the consumer market. But DJI isn't alone out there. The French proprietorship Parrot has been quietly making flying machines for roughly as long as the Chinese giant. True, most of Parrot's efforts have been substitute toys. But with the introduction of the Anafi, Parrot's first folding, 4K-shooting drone, it looked like the company was finally close at hand to compete head-to-head with DJI. Unfortunately, it isn't. First, the good news. The Parrot Anafi has some features that you can't find on for all practical purposes any other consumer drones. The camera gimbal can tilt up and down a full 180 degrees, meaning not only can it fill straight down, but also straight up, enabling it to capture some unique angles. Shoot a slackliner from underneath. Another, the Anafi manages to keep the rotors out of the shot, a feat most DJI drones fail to do while simply flying speed up with the camera pointed straight ahead. Camera Tricks The Anafi's camera is also equipped with a "lossless" zoom lens, which is damned rare in consumer drones. You can zoom 1. 4x when shooting 4K, and 2. 4x when in 1080p mode. The drone has the usual retainers of automatic camera shots (dronie, orbit, reveal, parabola, and so on), but the zoom capability allows it to muscle off one really neat shot: The Dolly Zoom. The famous camera trick employed so effectively by Alfred Hitchcock in Wooziness. It's that shot where the subject stays the same size in the frame, but the background seems to come closer or get further away. The recently announced DJI Mavic 2 Zoom (which I haven't tested) can also do this. But that's the only drone other than the Anafi with the chips. And the Dolly Zoom trick is hands-down my favorite thing about this drone. The other unique feature the Anafi has is 4K HDR video, and here's where things start thriving wrong. The HDR footage looks pretty terrible. It has tons of noise in the shadows, highlights are still blown out, and the greens and yellows show up grossly oversaturated. The HDR skill is something Parrot is touting to set it apart, but I would say that the HDR footage is more or less unusable. Standard 4K footage looks pretty company when you're all zoomed out. Especially when flying during the golden hour, the Anafi manages to produce some very cinematic-looking footage. But things devolve when you start to look closer. The excursions in the image is only more obvious when you use the drone's built-in zoom. The zoom degrades the image quality so badly that you're better off just not using it, aside from the awesome Dolly Zoom. In-Beat a retreat Turbulence Flying the Anafi isn't much fun either. Out of the box, its response to the controls is extravagantly sluggish. You can go into the settings and tweak the speed at which it rotates and rises, which does on my oath help a lot, but when compared to its closest competitor, the DJI Mavic Air, the Anafi feels lacking in responsiveness. While I sent it up into the air and let it float in place for a moment, I looked up and saw that it was creeping closer and closer to a tree branch. The next big hole is that the Anafi has no hindrance avoidance sensors. The Mavic Air's. Source: www.wired.com
